Older Total War games garnered immense attention upon their release, obtaining commercial success from a vast, dedicated, and hardcore audience that followed the series. From this audience came the renowned mods such as Third Age: Total war for Medieval 2, and Darthmod for Empire: Total War. However, the last three entries in the series (Shogun 2, Napoleon, and Empire) have become increasingly harder to mod. As a result, the future of the series is in question. In stark contrast to the "overhauls" and "total conversions" of Rome and Medieval 2, the mods for the most recent three games are simply gameplay tweaks and minor unit packs.
CraigTW, The Creative Assembly's main representative on the TWcenter.net forums, has said that the increased difficulty for modding the new games is not due to Creative Assembly's push for downloadable content but rather the nature of the engine of the games. Shogun 2 stands out in this category: due to the engine being based on binary code rather than the .pak files of older games, modding is an extremely intricate and delicate process. However, this has not deterred the most committed of modders. TWcenter.net forum members such as Radious and Darth Vader have created the closest things to "overhauls" for the game. While many might think that Creative Assembly is trying to profit off of gamers' loyalty, they cannot deny that the company has returned the favor, in the form of releasing near-comprehensive mod tools for all their titles.
